I served in the military, but only in a support role. I did get a good feel for how the military works and how it can be improved.
But, I think that you are trying to create an idolized version of a good, but flawed soldier.
That’s a good thing and I applaud you for that.
I would personally clean up the text a little. I’d take out the references to dope addicts and magical figures.
But, you made your point. A soldier is an ordinary guy doing a tough job and doing it well.
