rawhide Chew Toys: do you rate them or slate them?
I’ve seen many poeple on Y!A dogs praise rawhide chew toys to the high heavens, and some go into rants about how awful they are. Many suggest alternatives (cow snouts or tracheas for example)
My dog doesn’t like toys anymore (she’s 12 and prefers a nice treat or scratch behind the ear) so this is out of curiostoty more than anything.
What is your opinion on rawhide chews, and why?
I dislike rawhide chews for several reasons, the first being they’re dangerous – especially to small/toy dogs and teething puppies.
Dogs lack the ability to digest rawhide completely – this can lead to many gastrointestinal issues such as blockages, constipation, and sometimes require surgeries to be performed – something I saw a whole lot of during my mentorship under my vet.
I’ve also known two people who had to do emergency tracheotomies (luckily they had been trained) in order to save their dogs when choking on rawhide.
My simple answer is why put your dog at risk with a “treat” when there are so many other less dangerous options out there?
Where I am against rawhides, I think all natural beefhide and porkhide is a bit different. Merrick offers these options in the form of products such as Bullystix, which I’ve never heard complaints about.
But as I stated, dogs get just as much joy out of gnawing on pig’s ears, lamb bones, tracheas, and snozzles,so why not stick with a tasty treat that doesn’t have such unfavorable setbacks?
