Training for agility?
I have a really wonderful dalmatian mix that I would just love to do agiltity with. He is very quick and nimble and he can jump well. He jumps a baby gate we set up to keep the other dogs out of the kitchen from a stand still! He has lots of energy and loves to run around and have fun. He is also very obedient though, he knew sit, down, shake, bow, stay, and come since he was 9 months old. I currently have been clicker training him for all his commands. Does anyone have any information on how to start training a dog for agility? Also, are there any cheap ways to build practice obstacles I can set up in the back yard?
I will be doinging it mostly for fun, not competition. I think he would really enjoy being able to please me and complete a task while it seems he is getting to play. So it will be more for our own enjoyment, not competition.
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your dog has a strong base in obedience and a reliable recall. Obedience is the foundation of succeeding in agility.
A dog should be at least a year old before it really does much jumping and weaving. (I don’t know how old your dog is, so this may not pertain to you.)
How old are you? If you are under 18, you can look into joining 4-H dog project, most counties have agility as part of the dog project. (They also have showmanship and obedience, so you can get exposed to more activities that go on in the “dog world”.)

As for obstacles, I highly recommend you start taking agility classes before you get your own obstacles. If you don’t know how to properly use the equipment, you or your dog may get hurt. Also, equipment is quite expensive, and you’ll want to make sure both you and your dog enjoy agility before sinking that kind of money into it.
Once you have taken classes and learned how to properly use the equipment (and also found that you and your dog enjoy it), here’s some places to start for equipment:

Also, check with agility clubs and trainers in your area. I know in my area, some of the agility clubs/trainers have equipment building workshops where you learn how to make certain pieces of equipment (the price of the class includes all the materials as well). At the end of the workshop, you have a piece of agility equipment to take home.
If you are comfortable with carpentry, or have a friend or relative that is, you can have them make some of the equipment as well. Most good carpenters don’t even need “plans” to make the simple structures of agility equipment (A-frame, dog walk).
Depending on how big your dog is, you can improvise on things as well. For example, I bought a kid’s play tunnel for a fraction of the price an “agility” tunnel would cost ( http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5481440 ). Keep your eyes peeled and be creative!
